Taking care of the Bat
Now it is time to take care of the purchased bat before you take it down to your matches.
Knocking/Oiling
✓ Most English Willow bats and some Kashmir willow bats need knocking and oiling after buying and once every 3 to 4 weeks.
✓ A bat mallet/hammer is used to knock the bat to compact and fortify the grains along the edges, toe and blade/face of the bat.
✓ Oiling retains the dampness of the bat and thus prevents cracks/splits. Apply 3-4 coats along the edges, toe and face and let it dry for 24 hours.
Toe Guard
✓ The toe of the bat carries less amount of wood compared to the middle and so, it is prone to damages.
✓ A toe guard is highly recommended in case it doesn't come along with a purchased bat.
